Asia Pacific consumers become more conscious about their travel choices
Ninety-five percent of travellers from the Asia Pacific region are interested in sustainable travel options, compared to the 90 percent global rate
Data based on YouGov’s latest Travel & Tourism Report 2022 revealed that 26 percent of Gen Zs intend to spend more on travel products and services in the next 12 months.
Globally, domestic travel (45 percent) outpaces intention to travel abroad (16 percent), and the Asia-Pacific region is no exception, with more than half of Gen Zs in Indonesia (57 percent) Thailand (55 percent), and Malaysia (54 percent) wanting to travel domestically in the coming year.
Similar sentiments are shared by more than two in five people in China (49 percent), Japan (44 percent), Australia, and one-third of people in the Philippines (33 percent).
Singapore is the only country in the Asia Pacific region where more people intend to travel abroad (20 percent) than domestically (17 percent).
Meanwhile, Indian travellers have been named the most intrepid tourists in the Asia Pacific region, according to an 11-country APAC Travel Confidence Index. The data revealed that they were more keen on travelling after the COVID-19 pandemic compared to tourists from Australia, China, and New Zealand.
Once travel norms become more flexible, 86 percent of Indian travellers will be planning a trip within the next year, reported The Times of India. This is juxtaposed to Japanese tourists, who are at the bottom of the travel confidence index, as they remain uncertain about whether or not they will start planning trips again later this year.
Furthermore, a recent study revealed that Asia Pacific consumers are becoming increasingly conscious about their travel choices.
Hospitality Net’s Sustainable Travel Study shared five emerging sustainable travel trends for APAC consumers:
- 95 percent of travellers from the Asia Pacific region are interested in sustainable travel options, compared to the 90 percent global rate
- APAC consumers are willing to pay more to ensure sustainable travel
- 98 percent of APAC travellers are willing to make sacrifices to be more sustainable
- 70 percent of respondents noted that supporting local economies, local cultures and communities, and lessening environmental impact are considered aspects of sustainable travel
- Preferred sustainable travel destinations differ by country; some look for options in major cities while some, in lesser known locations
