According to research conducted by the National Institute of Information and Communications Strategy, 5G is expected to contribute 7.34 percent to Vietnam’s GDP growth in 2025.

It is among the government’s top priorities to develop digital infrastructure. By 2025, it wants to rank among the 30 nations with the most advanced and robust digital economy, which will primarily come from innovation, science, and technology. These will drive the country’s socio-economic development.

According to OpenGov Asia, Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) shared that 5G is helping it build smart cities for the benefit of healthcare and education. These applications mainly incorporate artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of things (IoT), and robotics.

The Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel), on the other hand, developed a 5G data transmission rate of over 4.7Gb per second, making them one of the fastest 5G telecom networks in Asia.

With download and upload rates of 900Mbps and 60Mbps, respectively, Vietnam has completed the installation of 5G stations using open radio access network (ORAN) technology. This is a big win for Vietnam’s 5G device R&D and manufacturing, as this will assist in the country’s commercialisation in the coming months.

There are more things to look forward to, as the country’s focus will also be on the development of 6G.

“Vietnam is to quickly develop its digital infrastructure and technologies with an objective to become one of the world’s leading nations in digitalisation with a vision for future development of the technology and meet the demand for skilled workers in the field,” said Nguyen Manh Hung, the minister of information and communications.

According to Vietnam News, the minister added that now was the time to expand the country’s digital infrastructure, emphasising cloud computing and digital platforms. These two are the fastest-growing fields, which grow at an annual rate of 15 to 20 percent.

It is estimated that the digital economy is growing at a pace of USD136 billion annually with more than 64,000 firms.
